Semiquantum versus semiclassical mechanics for simple nonlinear systems

چکیده
Quantum mechanics has been formulated in phase space, with the Wigner function as the representative of the quantum density operator , and classical mechanics has been formulated in Hilbert space, with the Groenewold operator as the representative of the classical Liouville density function. Semiclassical approximations to the quantum evolution of the Wigner function have been defined, enabling the quantum evolution to be approached from a classical starting point. Now analogous semiquantum approximations to the classical evolution of the Groenewold operator are defined, enabling the classical evolution to be approached from a quantum starting point. Simple nonlinear systems with one degree of freedom are considered, whose Hamiltonians are polynomials in the Hamiltonian of the simple harmonic oscilla-tor. The behaviour of expectation values of simple observables and of eigenvalues of the Groenewold operator, are calculated numerically and compared for the various semiclassical and semiquantum approximations .

Bohmian versus semiclassical description of interference phenomena
The origin of quantum interference characteristic of bound nonlinear systems is investigated within the Bohmian formulation of time-dependent quantum mechanics. By contrast to time-dependent semiclassical theory, whereby interference is a consequence of phase mismatch between distinct classical trajectories, the Bohmian, fully quantum mechanical expression for expectation values has a quasiclas...
متن کاملWhat Is Semiquantum Mechanics?
Semiclassical approximations to quantum dynamics are almost as old as quantum mechanics itself. In the approach pioneered by Wigner, the evolution of his quasiprobability density function on phase space is expressed as an asymptotic series in increasing powers of Planck's constant, with the classical Liouvillean evolution as leading term. Successive semiclassical approximations to quantum dynam...
متن کاملSemiquantum chaos in the double well.
The new phenomenon of semiquantum chaos is analyzed in a classically regular double-well oscillator model. Here it arises from a doubling of the number of effectively classical degrees of freedom, which are nonlinearly coupled in a Gaussian variational approximation (TDHF) to full quantum mechanics. The resulting first-order nondissipative autonomous flow system shows energy dependent transitio...
متن کاملDynamics of solitons in nearly integrable systems
A detailed survey of the technique of perturbation theory for nearly integrable systems, based upon the inverse scattering transform, and a minute account of results obtained by means of that technique and alternative methods are given. Attention is focused on four classical nonlinear equations: the Korteweg —de Vries, nonlinear Schrodinger, sine-Gordon, and Landau-Lifshitz equations perturbed ...
متن کاملOptical response functions with semiclassical dynamics
Observables in nonlinear spectroscopic measurements may be calculated from response functions, which have the form of averages of nested commutators involving the operator governing the radiation–matter interaction. We present a semiclassical formulation of the optical nonlinear response function, employing the Herman–Kluk frozen Gaussian approximation to the quantum propagator in the coherent ...
